Lara Dutta: "Miss Universe"
Lara Dutta, Miss Universe 2000, was crowned the first Miss Universe of the new millennium on May 12, 2000 in Cyprus.
``Ignorance may be bliss, but would you like your children to be ignorant?'' said Lara in response to the tie-breaker question which clinched her the title: `If ignorance is bliss, why do we seek knowledge?' The 5' 8'' Femina Miss India Universe was also judged Miss Photogenic at the preliminary round in Hyderabad on January 8.

Lara was born the youngest of three children to Wg. Cdr. L.K. Dutta (retired) and Jennifer Dutta in Ghaziabad, India on April 16,1978. In 1981, her family moved to Bangalore, India where she attended high school. After receiving the highest score in India on the English section of her National Board Exams, Lara continued her education at Bombay University and completed a degree in economics and a minor in communications. There was no doubt that Lara Dutta was intelligent and level-headed, but no one expected what happened next.
Her first opportunity came in the form of L'oreal, who had just entered the Indian market. They were conducting a model search in the 'garden city', which Lara entered and duly won, her prize was a four year modelling contract.
On an off chance, Lara entered the Femina Miss India competition, the prize would be entrance to the prestigious pageant of Miss Universe. Her natural beauty coupled with great intellect, resulted in her gaining the domestic accolade and plane ride to the idyllic Mediterranean islands. Lara Dutta competed with 78 other women from around the world for the title, but what set her apart from the crowd was her aptitude. When asked the obligatory questions on stage, she did not rant on about world peace like her attractive counterparts, instead she stated why pageants, in the face of adversity are still as important today.
High spirited and very adventurous by nature she cannot refuse a dare. Her fascination with astrology at an early age made Lara interested in being an astronomer or astronaut. An adventurous girl who is fearless and has done it all seeks more adventure. She is an established model by profession and has appeared in several ads. like Synergie, Ceat, Coke, Sprite, etc.
Away from the spotlight, Lara has been trained the Indian classical dance of Bharatnatyam, and loves to spend time reading autobiographies. She is also a keen adventure sport enthusiast, with rock climbing and bungee jumping, as two of her favourite extreme sports.
 On completion of her twelve month tenure as the most beautiful girl in the Universe, she entered into the film world. However unlike her predecessors, she has little interest in becoming a big star, instead her aspirations lie behind the camera. Her ambition is to become a top documentary filmmaker.
Lara currently resides in New York where she campaigns for awareness of HIV and drug addiction as part of her commitment to charitable work as Miss Universe.
